Birget; Ways to deal, Ways to heal
Choreography : Elle Sofe Sara
Scenography: Joar Nango
Created in February 2023
Based on the Sámi expression “Birget”, which means “to face and survive in a changing environment”, the play explores the way in which the State deals with its own colonial heritage, both pedagogically and critically. Sara and Nango create a healing bridge between silenced generations and institutional guilt. The dancers’ improvisations in relation to stories told build a collective movement with their bodies making reconciliation visible. The choreographer and set designer see the theatre space as an experimental space where the audience and the performers are together; in this way they tend to desacralise it and turn it into a ritual space to heal the trauma.
Press talks about it
“Joar Nango’s set design creates a bright, colourful and exciting space for the audience, and the space is well used and explored by the dancers.”
