Larina Waltz

Choreography Ashley Page
Music Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Light design Andy Murrell
Stage direction Ricardo Cervera

Created in 1993 – Duration 8 min

Originally created for The Royal Ballet, Larina Waltz uses Tchaikovsky’s carefree melodies in a showcase for the classical talent of the London City Ballet dancers. In a waltz that pushes tradition, near constant changes lead to a climactic finale.

« While it may have come across as a series of straight forward enchaînement, Page’s exceptional musicality and deft reimagining of basic classical steps makes this a fast-paced, adrenaline inducing rush of fiendishly challenging choreography. »

The silken precision of this Black & White ballet, set to an Alexei Haieff composition in equal parts vivacious and quietly nostalgic, makes this rarely performed work a delightful nod to the reputed Balanchine style. Haieff Divertimento features a blues pas de deux and combines popular American dance idioms and modern concert dance with classic ballet.
